There's been another mauling incident involving a young child.

A four-year-old Cleburne County boy was attacked by a chained pitt bull yesterday afternoon at a residence on County Road 662, located between Helfin and Ranburne. Sheriff Joe Jacks said the boy's grandmother struggled to separate the dog and child. He said a neighbor heard the woman's screams and was able to rescue the youngster. Relatives said Pharis Fish suffered injuries to his upper body and is listed in serious condition today at Children's Hospital in Birmingham.

Authorities said the dog is being kept in a cage awaiting examination. It's the third pit bull attack on an Alabama child in the past two months. In early February an eight-year-old boy was attacked in Gadsden. Earlier this month a three-year-old boy was mauled at his house in Chatom.

A pit bull mauled a 3-year-old boy and bit his mother repeatedly before being shot to death by a man driving past the family's rural yard in Chatom.

Corey Kelley said he saw Shonda Busby in the yard Wednesday and at first thought she was playing with the dog. He turned his truck around for another look and saw blood. "The closer I got to her, I could see the blood on her, the bite marks on her arms," he told the Mobile Register."I pulled up to her and said, 'Are you alive?' She said, 'Yes, get this dog off me. He's biting me, he's killing me.'"

Kelley drove home, called 911 and grabbed his .22 rifle. He said he was unaware Busby was lying on her 3-year-old son until after he shot the dog. "I was real reluctant about doing it, but I didn't know what else to do because that dog was big. You get a dog like that that's upset, a man can't handle a dog like that by himself," he said.

From his truck, he aimed at the dog, telling Busby to lie as still as she could. "Shoot," she told him. He shot the dog right between the eyes, he said.

When Busby sat up, he saw her little boy, his scalp torn, with bite marks all over his body. The child, whose name was not released, was in fair condition at University Hospital in Birmingham.

Kelley estimated the dog was about a year old and weighed more than 100 pounds. Busby told him she'd been fighting with the dog for about an hour, he said.

Chatom Police Chief Dwayne Garrick said nobody was home at the neighboring trailer at the time of the attack, though neighbors about a block away could hear noises. "But they didn't know what was going on," he said. "They heard some hollering and screaming and thought it might have been kids."

Busby had surgery at USA Medical Center in Mobile and was released Thursday, the chief said.

Garrick praised Kelley's life-saving actions. "He's to be commended. A lot of people won't even stop nowadays. I credit him with saving both of them's lives and I also credit the mother with saving the baby," Garrick said.

Kelley, who said he once helped save a baby from a wrecked car, said he did not feel like a hero. "I'd do it again in a heart beat," he said. "I'm just an old country boy. Helping people is just something I like doing."

Medical bills for a 3-year-old boy and his mother mauled last week by a pit bull in Chatom have already started to arrive, said a family friend, who has set up a medical benefit fund for the toddler.

Casey Williams was attacked by the family's pit bull, which they had gotten just the day before, as he played outside March 2. His mother, Shonda Busby, was badly bitten on her legs and arms when she threw herself over her son to protect him. She was unable to prevent the dog from severely injuring the boy's scalp, and the family said they now expect him to have to undergo skin grafts.

"They have no insurance. None," said friend Lisa Anderson, who established the account at Southwest Bank, which has offices in Chatom, Jackson, McIntosh and Leroy.

She doesn't have a specific amount she's trying to raise, but said Casey's first bill, from USA Medical Center, was for $1,800 and she expects the family's medical costs to be "way on up there." She asked for "just whatever people feel like giving from their heart."

The attack stopped when a neighbor, Corey Kelley, shot and killed the dog.

Casey was transferred from Mobile to the hospital at the University of Alabama at Birmingham to undergo surgery. His mother received 100 stitches, is using a wheelchair and can't climb stairs yet, Anderson said. The family is also trying to get emergency Medicaid insurance and is seeking assistance through nonprofit groups, she said. Ronald McDonald House provided a room for Busby and her family in Birmingham.

Casey has been singing and working in coloring books, she said. He was expected to return home Thursday. "As far as his personality and everything, Casey is the same Casey," said Anderson, who had been to visit. "He's very resilient, and he's got a lot of people that love him."

She added, "He never lost consciousness. He remembers everything that happened. He's talked about it, just that the dog bit his head." Anderson said she doesn't know whether the family will ever get another dog.

AL: Girl Attacked by Pit Bull

January 27, 2005
NewsChannel 19's Carson Clark Reports,

A Marshall County girl is in Children's Hospital in Birmingham after a pit bull attacked her Wednesday night in Albertville.

Police say three-year-old Cameron Cox was with her dad at a home on Cottage Avenue. The pit bull was kept in the garage. Police say the dog managed to get inside the house, and Cameron saw the dog and screamed. The dog immediately attacked, grabbing her abdomen.

Cameron's dad and the owner were able to get the dog off her, and Cameron was rushed to Marshall Medical Center South. She was then sent to Children's Hospital.

Cameron has wounds to her stomach, and doctors are afraid the dog's teeth may have punctured the her stomach. She is, however, expected to recover.

The owner of the dog took it into the backyard and shot it. Albertville police have sent the dog's remains to be tested for rabies.
